Eve 6 has done it again. They've produced a hard-hitting and polished album, It's All in Your Head, just released this month.
This album is the third set to Eve 6's previous platinum-selling self-titled debut album in 1998 and gold-selling Horrorscope in 2000. Eve 6 has barely slowed down since Horrorscope. The band crossed radio formats when they landed No. 1 singles and scored MTV hits with the songs, "Inside Out," "Leech," "Promise," and "Here's to the Night." They took a two-year break to be on the road and compose their new album, It's All in Your Head. This album has a sound that is much more edgy and raw. And if you listen close, you'll get Eve 6's sense of humor coming out in some of the songs, along with its clever lyrics.
It's All in Your Head was produced by newcomer Gregg Wattenberg, who also mixed songs alongside Tom Lord-Alge (Rolling Stones, Hole, Marilyn Manson) and Jim Scott (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters). The album contains only 12 tracks, almost all of which are at least three or four minutes long. The album's key tracks include the all-out rave-up, "Without You Here," my personal favorite on the CD. One song I did not particularly care for was a Bob Dylan-like ballad "Hey Montana," that just didn't seem to fit on the album and was strange, overall. Some other tracks that were worthy of listening to were "Think Twice," "At Least We're Dreaming," "Good Lives," "Girlfriend," and the very heavy "Friend of Mine," a poignant song and very true story sung by lead vocalist Max Collins. All in all, It's All in Your Head's catchy lyrics and raw guitar sound will keep you entertained.
After their first two albums, the three band members, Collins (vocals, bass), Jon Siebels (guitar, vocals), and Tony Fagenson (drums, vocals) went on non-stop tours. The band seems to have lost a few important years of their youth. Being signed right out of high school by RCA Records, (they're still in their early 20s), the trio has much to be proud of. They've already reached their childhood dreams, and they're only 20. And Eve 6 has maintained a solid fan base out on the road touring with bands like Good Charlotte, while also being regulars at international festivals like Summersault and Fuji Rock.
So what is normal? The band says they don't know. But they wanted a new beginning. They wanted to go back to their roots to what made people like them in the beginning, although they knew they also had to show people that they had grown and matured as artists. So It's All in Your Head does just that. Containing a raw sound, crisp guitar riffs, and a booming and propulsive rhythm section, it features the band's ability to produce a solid, intelligent, powerful, and even punky pop album.
Let's hope they keep shelling out more CDs in years to come. They've proven that they can run with the best of the bands, and have become quite successful for their age. If they come to Arizona, I would definitely go to a concert to see if their live performances are as good as their CDs. Something tells me they are.
