A local antiques and Oriental rug retailer donated a silk Tabriz rug worth $28,500 to ASU's Student Carillon Society, which is raising money to help restore the school's carillon.
David Adler of David Adler Antiques & Oriental Rugs donated the rug. The members of the Student Carillon Society will be selling the 10-year-old rug to raise funds. The funds raised will go to an account that will be used to restore the carillon.
David Adler said donating this rug would be ideal for many reasons. The donated rug is a hand-knotted wool and silk Tabriz carpet, with a black field, floral design and red border. Adler said, "The Persian rug was ideal not only because it is of significant value, but also because it would appeal to a wider scope of individuals."
The rug is 10 years old but has never been used.
The carillon society is still unsure how it will go about selling this rug. Some ideas it has include having a raffle for the rug or holding a silent auction.
The society raised approximately $2,000 and hopes the rug will bring in at least $22,000. It needs $50,000 to pay for the retuning and cleaning of ASU's original carillon.
ASU students were mixed on the idea of selling the rug. Although they thought it was a good idea to raise money for the carillon, they were unsure whether or not they would donate to the cause or not.
Broadcasting senior Tyler Griffin said, "I think it's great if someone wants to donate a rug of such value and magnitude, because that is $28,500 that ASU could use elsewhere such as for new computers or new structures around campus."
