Mesa police apprehended a suspect in the stabbing murder of J.P.'s Food Mart clerk Sukhvir Singh on Wednesday.

Police arrested Bruce Reed, a 40-year-old transient, early Wednesday after a resident identified him from police descriptions.

Reed was booked on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing of Singh.

Singh was stabbed multiple times with a large knife Tuesday evening, police said. He collapsed and died at the scene, said Tempe police Sgt. Dan Masters.

The Associated Press reports that Singh, who immigrated from India in 1997, was a member of the Sikh faith. However, authorities do not believe his death was a hate crime.

According to witnesses, Reed was a frequent customer at J.P.'s Food Mart, located at 3408 S. Mill Ave.

"According to other customers, Reed and Singh had an amicable relationship," Masters said.

No cash or personal property was removed from the store. Police haven't determined a motive for the murder.
