Two ASU football players have been charged with aggravated assault and criminal trespass after they reportedly beat an ASU student and damaged items in his apartment.

According to the police report, junior linebacker Barton Hammit and senior defensive lineman Matt Mason forcibly entered the victim's apartment around 1:45 a.m. on Oct. 10 and slapped and punched him in the face.

The student reportedly suffered from a bruised and lacerated face, but refused medical attention.

Hammit and Mason fled the scene following the attack, Tempe police spokesman Jeff Lane said, adding that Hammit was arrested in the apartment complex shortly after he fled, but Mason has not yet been located.

Hammit was charged with criminal damage after he reportedly broke a table in the victim's apartment, located in the 2300 block of East Apache Boulevard. He was booked into Madison Street Jail in Phoenix.

Both players have been suspended from the football team indefinitely, assistant athletic director of media relations Mark Brand said.

"The players are governed by the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, which takes the burden off coaches to punish players," Brand said.

The code states that "athletic privileges may be suspended or cancelled" by the University if violations of the Student Code of Conduct occur.

The charges against both players have been forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney's office.
