So I'm listening to sports-talk radio when my ears are assaulted by a bombastic advertisement for the Valley's newest sports team: the Arizona Sting.
It seems the brand-new Glendale Arena will not only host the Phoenix Coyotes, but also the newest franchise in the National Lacrosse League.
The commercial warns Valley listeners to "get ready for some action."
I say, "Get ready for some apathy."
Despite the fact there is lacrosse at ASU, UA and numerous Arizona high schools, I doubt anyone was begging for yet another sports team in the Valley.
The arrival of new franchises coinciding with the building of a sports facility is not new. After America West Arena opened in 1992, three new sports juggernauts were unleashed - the Arizona Sandsharks with soccer, the Arizona Rattlers with arena football and the Phoenix Smash with team tennis.
With the exception of the Rattlers, who have experienced decreased interest as of late, all have folded within a few years after lukewarm turnouts.
The same will happen with the Arizona Sting.
