Former ASU football player Mitchell Freedman has been arrested on charges of kidnapping, sexual assault, aggravated assault and sexual abuse.

Freedman was charged Monday in connection with a September sexual assault of a woman at gunpoint.

Freedman reportedly approached the victim on foot near an apartment complex at 67th Avenue and Indian School Road on Sept. 12, said Sgt. Laurie Williams, Phoenix police spokeswoman.

Freedman allegedly identified himself as a security guard, pulled a gun on the 18-year-old victim and then took her inside the apartment complex, Williams said.

Officers identified Freedman through a flier that was being circulated about another incident.

A court-ordered test proved Freedman's DNA matched evidence obtained following the alleged assault, Williams added. Officers still are investigating the other incident, Williams said.

Freedman, known as "Fright Night," was a free safety for the ASU football team from 1995 to 1998. During the 1997 season, he netted 58 tackles and two sacks, forcing opposing teams to lose as many as 18 yards.

He signed as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders in 1999 but was released before the season began.

Freedman is being held in Madison Street Jail.
