ASU East Provost Chuck Backus said the east campus and other ASU campuses would be renamed to reflect characteristics defined by the University's design teams.

The east campus has been discussing possible name choices for a year now, Backus said.

The ASU East Provost's cabinet has firmly decided on the name "ASU Polytechnic," he added. The name change requires the approval of ASU President Michael Crow and the Arizona Board of Regents.

Crow said that a new name would reflect the east campus' direction.

"ASU East is evolving as a polytechnic, and will be named to reflect that," he said.

Backus added that all ASU campuses would be renamed uniquely eventually.

All four new names, for ASU Main, East, West and Downtown Center, would likely be sent to the board of regents at the same time, Backus said. He said that could happen anytime this year.

Crow said the name changes would allow each campus to promote its strength.

"Our vision is to make it school-centered, not campus-centered, as it is currently designed," Crow said.

Crow said he wants to remove the hierarchy that exists between the campuses to promote the "One University in Many Places" concept.

"We must do this in a way that is not hierarchical, or tiered in such a way that some programs are viewed less than others," Crow said of the changes.
