In the modern world of haute couture, Designer Narciso Rodriguez is known for his sleek signature style in women's clothing. This season is no different. His Spring 2004 Ready-to-wear collection had a Brazilian flair and was full of the usual form-fitting dresses and bodices. Instead of chiffon, Rodriguez used flowing silks, breezy cottons, light linens, and sheer tulle.
He incorporates vertical lines and lined panels to emphasize the slimness of a woman's form. Neutral tones like crisp white, eggshell, nude, light grey, and black were dominant but a few sherbet and lavender pieces hinted that it is indeed, a spring collection. There were subtle details like beading, strategically placed zippers and silk lines that added to the already chic collection. Strappy sandals accompanied both flowing dresses and tailored pants. I particularly enjoyed his cream and light grey linen dress that was mixed with black lingerie spaghetti straps...a classic spring look with a twist.
Rodriguez is a New Jersey native and studied at the Parson's Institute. He has worked with many high fashion designers such as Donna Karan, Anne Klein and Calvin Klein. But the designer really hit the celebrity world when he made the late Carolyn Bessette's (John Kennedy Jr.'s wife) wedding dress, during his time at Cerruti. He is the first designer in history to be awarded by the Council of fashion designers of America for "Womenwear designer of the year," twice in a row - once in 2002 and again in 2003.
After viewing the collection, it's clear that his pure textures and practical tailoring continues to rule the runway this season. His loyal fans love the feminine feel he gives to structural pieces, like jackets and bodices. "I think something can be very classic and be completely modern," Rodriguez said. Rodriguez proves that flashy and fleshy aren't the only ways to be sexy in the spring.
