Building a healthy community

Graphic design sophomore Seung Kim studies in the lobby of Mariposa Hall on Monday afternoon. The dorm has recently been nicknamed "healthy hall" after approximately 30 students took a pledge to say no to drugs for the fall 2004 semester.

Residential Life will help more than 70 ASU students say no to drugs next fall.

As part of a new program through the department, 38 female and 34 male Mariposa Hall residents can sign up to join the residence hall's "Healthy Living Community."

The new program will offer resident participants separate floors for men and women, healthy dining options and a healthy lifestyle lecture series.

Mariposa Residence Hall Director Alicia Dimond said she thought the program was an excellent idea.

"It's a great idea that I would love to see implemented and followed through with," she said. "I think it is a positive move in the right direction."

Mariposa desk assistant Venkatesh Harikrishnan said the hall would also have limited visitation hours.

"It's good to have a community that's more health-conscious," he said.

Mariposa resident Dominique Rue, an undeclared freshman, said she did not like the changes.

"They expect you to take responsibility with your classes and tuition, yet they are taking away your freedom and responsibility by limiting you," she said. "They expect you to be responsible, but they treat you like kids."

But students have the option of signing up to be part of the community.

Psychology senior Shane O'Brien said he thought problems could arise with the rules.

"I think it's a really good idea, but adherence could be a problem," he said. "It strikes me as interesting, but at the same time 72 students out of 55,000 isn't a lot. I mean, will it be worth it?"

The dorm will also have "programming activities promoting physical, mental, ethical and emotional wellness," literature from Residential Life said.

Mariposa resident John Lee, a business freshman, said he liked the dorm the way it is.

"Things seem to be going well as they are," he said. "You don't really run into any problems. It's pretty laid back."
