The ASU Australian Football Team--in their first season in the league--advanced to the Arizona Australian Football League grand finale with a victory over the Scottsdale Scorpions 11-11-77 to 5-6-36 Tuesday night.

It is the Sun Devils first season in the league.

Freshman Darren Kelley scored four goals for the Sun Devils, while Anders Kjorling added two.

Dave Kephart, Brandon Sisson, Jason Parks, Brad Pope and James Todd each added one goal each.

"We had a lot of excitement tonight," said Kelley. "We wanted to make it into the final. We wanted to show the rest of the league that we're not just some college kids-we're here to stay and we're here to play hard."

The Sun Devils next play the Tucson Javelinas in the grand finale of the season. The Javelinas ended the regular season in first place, while the Sun Devils were second.

Kjorling said he was excited about the team's chances on Saturday.

"We're pumped up to win this one," the junior from Sweden said.

The teams played twice during the regular season. ASU won the first game, while Tucson won the last time they played.

Parks, the club president, said the team has to improve in some areas if they want to win the grand finale.

"We have to be more accurate with our kicking," he said. "We need to be more intense than we were against them last game and we need to play with fire."

Parks added that many of the players, although inexperienced, had improved a lot throughout the season.

"It just comes down to making the simple plays," he said.

The game will be played at 2:00 p.m. at Tucson's Estevan Park, located at 1000 N. Main Ave.

Kjorling said the team had made a lot of progress throughout the year.

"We've really developed as a team this year," he said. "We help each other out more."

This season, Kephart has played in five games and said he enjoyed the camaraderie the players had, but added that it was difficult working around everyone's different schedules.

"If we can come out with the same intensity on Saturday that we played with tonight, then we will be alright," he added, in reference to the final game.
