Meet. Chill. Connect. Eat. Lead. Celebrate.
The welcoming slogans on the new Student Union banners symbolize a certain unique characteristic the building represents.
The banners were designed by graphic information technology students Brian Davis, Angel Jimenez and Hsiu-Ling Lin. Professor La Verne Harris supervised the entire design process.
Union staff decided they wanted students to be involved in the design, just as they were involved in the architectural design of the union.
"We chose to have students design the banners because the building is for them," said Steve Mindel, Web and graphic coordinator for the Student Union and Student Activities.
There were others interested, but the students came first, said Mike Mader, director of Student Activities.
"Various companies wanted to design banners, but we wanted our students to be involved," Mader said.
Students reacted positively to the project.
"This is a colorful fulfillment that has added life to ASU East," said Angel Jimenez, member of design team and GIT sophomore.
The project was conducted on the Internet and through e-mail. The team met only once at the beginning of the project. Most of the members were scattered all over the world. Some of them were in Chicago, Canada and Taiwan.
The most challenging part for the students was generating a consistent design and choosing the color scheme. Students designed preliminary sketches and final digital version of the banners.
"We wanted the banners to stand out and [at the same time] blend in with campus," said Mindel. The final selection of the colors matched the colors in the Wanner and Sutton buildings, and it also matched the Agribusiness Complex.
