Women's tennis team faring well in doubles: ASU sophomore Wendy Pilecka advanced to the semifinals of the Cal Nike Invitational before falling to UA's Stephanie Balzert in three sets in women's tennis on Saturday. Pilecka defeated Washington State's Amy Toth in the second round and Kelly Baritot of Texas in the third to advance to the semis.
ASU sophomore Rebecca Rankin also won two matches, advancing to the quarterfinals by downing UC-Davis' Ally Muller and No. 1 ranked Sasha Podkolzina of California. Rankin lost to Balzert as well.
Sophomore Vana Tomas, who lost in the opening round, won three straight matches to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket.
The Sun Devils sent three of a possible four doubles teams into the semifinals of the tournament. The pairs of Jessica Leitch and Pilecka, Kady Pooler and Rankin and Lauren Colalillo and Sabrina Capannolo all advanced to the semifinals. Results of semifinal and finals action, which were played on Sunday, were not available at press time.

Freshmen represent at swim and dive Intrasquad meet: The Sun Devil swimming and diving squad gave fans a glimpse of what to expect this season at the annual Maroon and Gold Intrasquad meet Friday.
The freshmen did not back down from their more experienced counterparts with Sarah Fischer, Lucas Azevedo and CJ Nuess taking first place in two events apiece. Standouts on the diving board included sophomore Cassidy Farwell and junior Brant Bingham, who also received top nods in two individual contests.
