Gymnastics: Devils qualify for South Central Regional

The ASU gymnastics team has qualified for the postseason.

The Sun Devils snagged the No. 5 seed in the six-team South Central Regional with a 194.85 regional qualifying score. The event will be held April 9 in Lincoln, Neb.

"We've got to load up," ASU coach John Spini said. "The girls will be doing a lot more on their own at practice."

Spini plans to upgrade the difficulty in his team's routines before regionals.

Junior Ashley Kelly and sophomore Cassandra Jusino might perform more difficult vaults in an attempt to compete with gymnasts from No. 6 Michigan and No. 8 Nebraska.

The Sun Devils have managed to stay competitive despite injuries and a lack of difficulty on vault, but have been at a distinct disadvantage all season.

Freshman all-arounder Karissa Vossler (knee) and freshman Taryn Shockley (arm) have suffered season-ending injuries. Kelly (foot) and junior Lauren Powell (ankle) also have fought through injuries.

Kelly, the reigning national champion on the beam, needs a strong supporting cast for ASU to make an impact in Lincoln. The top two teams advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for April 21-23 in Auburn, Ala. The individual event winners at each of the six regional competitions also advance, even if their team does not qualify.

Facing long odds, ASU remains within reach of the NCAA Championships. When consistent, ASU is capable of competing with high-powered teams, such as Nebraska and Michigan.

Other teams in the South Central Regional include No. 18 UA, No. 19 Missouri and Illinois.
