Gymnastics: Gymnastics ready for Pac-10 champ

The No. 25 ASU gymnastics team has a tendency to thrive in the spotlight.

There will be no bigger or brighter one than the Pac-10 Championships on Saturday at the Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif., where the Sun Devils will face five teams ranked in the top 25.

Heavy favorite UCLA ended their regular season ranked third with Oregon State (12), UA (19), Washington (23) and ASU claiming the 25th spot in a loaded conference.

ASU began the season at No. 9 in the GymInfo rankings, but completely dropped out of the top 25 (based on regional qualifying score). ASU found its way back into the final spot after a strong performance last week against No. 2 Utah.

In that meet, ASU posted their highest team score of the season at 196.6. The Sun Devils did so on the road and without their star, junior Ashley Kelly, who sat out two events due to a sore foot.

The Sun Devils appear to be back on track at the end of a season where nothing seemed to go their way.

ASU (6-7) has struggled all season to fill the holes left after injuries to freshmen Karissa Vossler and Taryn Shockley and junior Lauren Powell.

Last year, ASU tied for fourth in the conference tournament with a 196.775, its best road score of the season. With the effort, ASU earned a spot at the NCAA Regionals.

Stanford won the meet with a 197.9.

However, this weekend, the Bruins will be the heavy favorite, led by Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week Kristin Maloney. The senior was instrumental in UCLA's come-from-behind win over then-No. 3 Arkansas. In the meet, she took home her fifth all-around title of the year.

Don't expect the scores to be as high this year. The NCAA has undergone a drastic change in its judging criteria, eliminating overly inflated scores.
