Mad at Martori
The Mar. 21 article on Che Guevara disgusted me. Arthur Martori took an unfeeling, sarcastic approach to a man who is no less than a hero to many Latin Americans. Martori's words reflect the cynicism and lethargy that is destroying American culture even at this very second.
Typical of a conservative journalist trying to talk politics, he completely ignores the historical context. Guevara lived in a world that gave him two realistic choices: the United States or the Soviets. Because the United States had effectively declared its stance against any Latin American liberation, he chose the latter.
It was a move of realism, not idealism. Does Martori think Che wanted to spend his life surrounded by violence? Did he get carried away at times? Yes. But let's not forget that most of the time he was merely answering fire with fire.
His violence is a consequence of the cards he was dealt. I don't see how that is right-wing at all. When American conservatives support violence and civil rights infringements, they have a clear choice not to.
Third World nations are not necessarily afforded this privilege when imperialism is coming down on their very identities like an axe.
