ASU to offer free bus passes to students, faculty

ASU is betting more than $600,000 that free bus passes will encourage students and employees to use public transportation, instead of cars, to get to and from campus.

The university will pay Tempe $631,000 for Valley Metro bus passes for all ASU students and employees. The passes will be available beginning July 1 in the ASU Parking and Transit Services office. The passes will be effective until January 16, 2006, when new passes will be issued.

The passes are part of a PTS test program to determine whether offering free public transportation to ASU students and employees will alleviate parking and traffic congestion on campus.

Tempe City Council voted unanimously to authorize the mayor to sign the ASU Public Transportation System Intergovernmental Agreement at its regular meeting on May 19.
