Devil Dish: Victory possible

Here's a quick scenario for you.

The two-time defending champions march into Tempe as a machine, churning out victories, only to have their bid for a three-peat go up in flames.

If that sounds familiar, it is. 1996. Nebraska. 19-0. For anyone connected with ASU, the game is unforgettable.

And now here we go again. The year is 2005 and the machine is USC. The experts say they can't be stopped. Of course, that is what everyone said about the Cornhuskers as well.

Can it happen again? Can ASU end a dynasty twice in 10 years? Why not? The Sun Devil offense looks nearly unstoppable. Sam Keller is throwing touchdowns like they are going out of style, and with the Trojans down to just three healthy scholarship corners, Keller should find them easy pickings.

ASU just needs to slow down the USC offensive juggernaut led by Heisman winner Matt Leinart and finalist Reggie Bush, and the victory is theirs. A task easier said than done, but certainly not impossible. After all, nobody could stop Nebraska either, until they ran into ASU.

A victory would make ASU a top-10 team and the Pac-10 favorite. Will it be tough? Sure. But can it be done? Absolutely.

One man's prediction: ASU 38, USC 31.
