Letters to the Editor: In-state tuition is earned:

Interesting article on residency. You know, it shouldn't be easy for out-of-state students to realize the benefit of in-state tuition.

The income tax payers of Arizona subsidize two-thirds of the cost of an education for resident students.

There is a presumption that an individual decides where to establish a permanent domicile after completing an education and not before.

Those who move here to go to school should overcome that presumption by showing that they are self-supporting, bona fide residents of Arizona.

Arizona's requirements are very similar to those of many states, and even less strict than others.

I'm sure these requirements are very difficult for the typical, full-time, out-of-state student to meet, but then again, why should it be easy to realize a benefit reserved for true Arizona residents?

Walls don't work:

Benjamin Horowitz obviously doesn't know his Chinese history. Yes, they built a huge wall to defend against northern invaders.

China was overrun and subsequently ruled by not one, but two different bands of "barbarians" - the Mongols, who became the Yuan Dynasty (remember Kublai Khan, the ruler of "Xanadu"?) and the Manchus, who became the Qin Dynasty.

What happened to them? They were culturally assimilated.

Which, if I remember correctly, also happens to be America's preferred tactic towards foreign "barbarians" in the modern era.

Cardinal backs need line:

Regarding the Devil Dish about draft picks by Chris Drexel:

Why would the Cardinals draft another running back after drafting J.J. Arrington in the second round of the 2005 draft? Arrington was a better college running back than White, posting more than 1800 yards his senior season. He and Marcel Shipp are a very capable backfield.

You cannot have a running game by just adding another great college running back to your roster. The Arizona Cardinals lack a talented offensive line and that is where their No. 1 draft selection should go.
