Swim and Dive: Puhakka ends career in style

ASU senior diver Joona Puhakka on Friday added another record to his lengthy resume in his last appearance at the Pac-10 Diving Championships, held in Federal Way, Wash.

Puhakka won the men's one-meter dive for the fourth year in a row, a feat he also achieved Thursday in the three-meter dive.

Puhakka became the first diver in Pac-10 history to win both springboard events for four straight years. In light of his efforts, he was honored as the men's Pac-10 Diver of the Meet.

Puhakka accumulated eight Pac-10 titles in his career at ASU.

Senior diver Brant Bingham also had a strong performance, finishing fourth in the one-meter dive and sixth in the three-meter dive.

The ASU women's swim team was also in action Thursday through Saturday in Long Beach, Calif. The Sun Devils finished sixth in the Pac-10 Championships with 670.5 points. UA took first with a score of 1325.5.

Sophomore Caitlin Andrew was unable to defend her title in the 100-yard butterfly despite finishing with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 52.78.

Andrew's time, her fastest this season, was not enough to beat Stanford senior Dana Kirk, who finished at 52.29.

Andrew also raced the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with an ASU record time of 53.81 and placing fourth in the event.

ASU freshmen swimmers Jen Beckberger and Amy Konowalik both had season-best times for ASU in the tournament.

Beckberger finished first in the 200-yard freestyle B consolation with a time of 1:48.82, and Konowalik won the 400-yard individual medley A consolation with a time of 4:21.16.

The men's swimming championships, held March 1-4 in Federal Way, Wash., will be the last Pac-10 competitions to run.
