Tempe man who drowned in Town Lake was former ASU student

Tempe police identified the man who drowned in Tempe Town Lake as a former ASU student.

Tempe resident John Rose-Palermo, 23, reportedly jumped off the Scottsdale Road bridge into the lake Tuesday afternoon and failed to stay afloat.

"We're still trying to find friends and see if he made any comments to anybody," said Sgt. Dan Masters, a police spokesman.

Rose-Palermo had been enrolled at ASU in Fall 2005 but was not registered as an ASU student this semester, Masters said.

Detectives had not found new information Wednesday explaining why Rose-Palmero jumped into the lake other than that it may have been an accident, he added.

"From everyone they've talked to [so far], it's been a surprise to everyone," he said.
