ASU Polytechnic: SRC fee proposed for Polytechnic students

The Associated Students of ASU Polytechnic campus passed a resolution to implement a $25 Student Recreation Center fee starting fall 2006 for all students.

This is a change for Polytechnic students. Currently, if students attend only the Polytechnic campus, they are not required to pay a SRC fee. Students who utilize both Polytechnic and Tempe campuses already pay this fee. Last fall that was 20 percent of Polytechnic campus students.

The fee requirement will apply to students enrolled in six or more credit hours at Polytechnic campus. Students taking five or fewer hours will pay a $12 fee to fund recreational programming and activities. Students paying the fee have access to recreation centers on all campuses.

DeAnna Lara, Polytechnic campus student body president, said she felt that students would see direct benefits from the money generated.

"Updated field maintenance, portable lights, equipment and additional student jobs will be created [with the funds]," she said. "This is just a forecast of the first year's generated revenues."

Lara also said that there are plans to have a student committee that will help structure the use of funds and, eventually, move forward with a larger fee to help generate revenue for a Student Recreation Center on Polytechnic campus.

Jeff Vance, director of recreation programs at Polytechnic campus, said the student senators each talked to students.

"The student government represented the student body by going into their classes, talking to people, asking their classmates and holding discussions asking if this was something they were interested in," he said. "The student government said 'the students that we talked to would support this.'"

The Arizona Board of Regents will now have the resolution forwarded to them, and will rule on the resolution next week.
