Club Sports: Fencing club aiming for NCAA team status

The ASU fencing club, Salle Diablo, has recently become the West Coast Collegiate Conference champion in the men's epee event.

This was the first year the club competed in the WCCC. The conference includes UC San Diego, USC, UCLA, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Tech and UC Irvine.

ASU finished third in the overall men's rankings and fifth in the women's overall. The club was led by the brilliant performances of Ben Brann and Michael Samhaber, who were named conference champions.

The only teams with better results this season were UCSD and Cal State Fullerton.

The club will use its momentum from this season when it heads to the collegiate championships in Clemson, S.C., on April 1.

All of the recent success could help bring the club's status up to an NCAA team, coach Jim Barbour said.

Rocky Mountain road trip

The ASU men's lacrosse club will have the chance to prove that they deserve their newest ranking in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League polls when they travel north to take on Colorado and Colorado State.

The No. 20 Sun Devils (6-2) are eager to replicate their last couple of strong performances.

"Right now, we're playing better than we've ever played before," said senior co-captain Greg Baudo.

After falling to top-ranked Sonoma State in late February, ASU reeled off four consecutive wins over Santa Clara, Chapman, Michigan State, and Utah State. The Sun Devils looked impressive during the win streak, outscoring opponents 41-25.

ASU looks to carry that momentum into its road trip. First up for the Sun Devils, a Saturday afternoon showdown with Colorado State. Sunday they travel to Boulder to take on Colorado.

If the Sun Devils can keep up their improved play, they should move further up in the rankings.

"If we can keep our composure we will be able to come away with two wins," Baudo said.

The club will hold its alumni game April 1, at 1 p.m. on the ASU band field.

Rugby takes on UA

For its farewell performance the ASU men's rugby club will take on rival UA.

The big match takes place Saturday at 1 p.m. on the ASU band field.

The importance of the game can be summed up by senior Blake Kelley's comments from a few weeks back.

"This is what we play the season for," he said. "A successful season to us is beating them. Bottom line."

After failing to qualify for postseason play, ASU will be looking to take its frustrations out and send its seniors off with one more win as Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils haven't been able to beat UA for the last 15 years. "We'd like to break that losing streak," senior Adam Binfeld said.
