Tempe man charged in fatal hit-and-run

Two Tempe men, one of whom is an ASU student, were arrested this weekend after allegedly crashing into a Gilbert police officer and leaving the scene of the fatal accident, officials said.

Officer Rob Targosz, 37, was on his way to work when a 2005 Ford Mustang struck his motorcycle at Price Road and Apache Boulevard in Tempe Saturday evening, said Sgt. Dan Masters, Tempe police spokesman.

The driver of the Mustang, 20-year-old Tyler Fahlman, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he failed to stop at a red light and collided with Targosz, Masters said.

"[Fahlman] made no attempt to slow down or stop," Masters said.

The passenger, 20-year-old Ryan Moore, has been an ASU student since spring 2005, according to the University registrar's office.

Witnesses saw Fahlman and Moore climb out of the wreckage through the driver's side window and run from the scene, Masters said.

Targosz was thrown from his motorcycle, landing approximately 30 yards away, Masters added.

He died early Sunday morning during surgery at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Hospital, according to a press release from Gilbert police.

Moore returned to the scene of the accident while police were investigating, and a breath test showed him to have alcohol in his system, Masters said.

He was charged with underage consumption of alcohol and released from police custody early Sunday morning, Masters added.

Fahlman was located at an apartment complex at 2323 E. Apache Blvd. two hours after the collision, Masters said.

"We contacted [Fahlman's] family member, who told us [Fahlman] drives that vehicle and where he lives," Masters said.

Breath tests showed Fahlman to be under the influence of alcohol, Masters said.

"Three hours after the accident he was still well over the legal limit," Masters said.

He admitted to being the driver at the time of the collision, Masters added.

Fahlman was charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident and booked into the Maricopa County Jail Sunday afternoon, Masters said.

Lt. Paul Chagolla, spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, said Fahlman was still being held at the jail Monday afternoon.
