Businesses make changes to attract students

Downtown businesses are gearing up for more student clientele by adding Sun Devil-friendly incentives as residents of the new campus settle in.

Majerle's Sports Grill is among the businesses in the downtown area working to gain the attention of students.

The restaurant, owned by former NBA All-Star and Suns player Dan Majerle, serves classic American food and drinks.

A.J. Sulka, president and managing partner of Majerle's, said the sports grill is preparing for the arrival of ASU students as well as other revitalization projects in the area by updating the surroundings.

The restaurant has gone through several upgrades over the last two years, including the addition of new big-screen televisions and furniture, and remodeling the floors, he said.

"We're just trying to get a little more updated so that when this stuff does hit, we can just sail smooth with it," Sulka said.

Sulka also plans to implement the Sun Card program, allowing students to use Sun Dollars as a form of payment, and to welcome student groups to host events at Majerle's, he said.

Scott Sanders, owner of local arts venue the Paper Heart, plans to add a happy hour to his schedule of events.

He also plans to attract students with wireless Internet access.
