Culture Shock: Behind the mask

The closest many students have been to a masquerade ball is watching the "Phantom of the Opera" DVD. Thanks to the ASU club Devil DanceSport, that could change the evening of Oct. 27.

Kathleen Consador, the club's event coordinator, says DanceSport decided to have a masquerade ball with standard ballroom dances such as the waltz and the foxtrot.

The ball will cater to both advanced dancers and rookies, with instructors to assist inexperienced couples. Lithuanian champions Olegas and Renata Koliakinas will teach a group lesson in the Viennese waltz. Those who attend are not required to be in couples, but dancing will be done as partners.

Guests are expected to wear masks, which Devil DanceSport will provide for those who don't have their own. Since the event is formal, Consador says ladies should wear some kind of dress and men should wear nice slacks.

"Some girls are wearing their prom dresses and some guys are coming in tuxedos and capes," she says.

The ball will be held in the Memorial Union Arizona Ballroom from 8 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27. Tickets are $10 per person, and reservations can be made at devildancesport.com.
