Did you hear that splat?
That's the championship hopes of the New York Yankees hitting a wall for the sixth straight year, and this offseason promises to be the most gruesome house-cleaning project owner George Steinbrenner has ever orchestrated.
For any other franchise, a 97-win season and an MVP (Jeter) would be considered a major accomplishment. But this is the Yankees we're talking about. Twenty-six World Series wins. And $200 million invested for Christ's sake.
Now the wrong team in New York is looking forward to ticker tape parades, and Georgie-boy is furious.
\Sure, the Yanks folded like a Trapper Keeper against the upstart Tigers, but aren't Steinbrenner's maniacal decisions at root of the franchise's failures?
After all, he is the one who attempted to capture the glory of the four titles won between 1996-2000 with cold, hard cash.
The result: a sterile, soul-less shell of former greatness.
Torre may get the axe, but it's King George who deserves the blame.
