One teen dies, man shot in separate incidents

One teenager died and another man was shot in two separate incidents Sunday, ASU police reported.

Loren Schmidgall, a 14-year-old Tempe boy, died from an accidental fall at parking Structure 7 on Sunday afternoon. An unidentified man was also shot Sunday morning on the south side of Sahuaro Hall, according to ASU police.

On Sunday at about noon, three boys were riding bikes on Structure 7, police reported.

The boys were on the sixth level of the structure and riding down a ramp to the fourth level, according to the police report.

Schmidgall allegedly began to yell about "no brakes" and reportedly struck the guardrail of the fourth level structure.

The bike hit the guardrail on the north side of the structure and Schmidgall fell to the parking lot below, police reported.

He was pronounced dead at Scottsdale Osborn Hospital at 12:34 p.m. Sunday, police reported.

In the separate Sahuaro Hall shooting incident, a suspect was caught and arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct in connection with the crime, Hardesty said.

A suspect driving a black Nissan through a Sahuaro Hall parking lot at about 3 a.m. almost hit a couple people, said business freshman Derek Hiett, who was at the scene.

One of the men, almost struck by the car, banged on the car as it drove by, Hiett said.

The suspect slammed on the brakes, got out of the car and shot the man in the stomach, witnesses said.

Hiett, one of about 15 people at the scene, said the man briefly pointed his gun at him.

"I was fearful for my life," he said.

Both the suspect and the victim fled the scene before ASU police arrived, said

Assistant Chief Jay Spradling.

The suspect was later caught ASU police are still trying to locate the victim

The suspect is not an ASU student and the victim is not believed to be an ASU student, Spradling said.

Three officers, Residential Life officials and about 50 students had a meeting Monday to talk about the shooting and general safety tips at Sahuaro Hall, Spradling said.

Even with the number of recent incidents, he said the Tempe campus is much

safer than most cities in the country.
