It's hard to tell whether Dennis Erickson was the best choice to be the new ASU football coach. But it does seem pretty clear he was the best choice out of who Vice President for University Athletics Lisa Love was considering.

There was former Washington State coach Mike Price. He is 60 years old, has a career record of 145-130 and got canned before ever coaching a game at Alabama for fraternizing with a stripper despite being a married man.

Also considered was Norm Chow. The former USC offensive coordinator is 60 years old and has never been a head coach in three decades in the profession.

Finally there was Erickson. He's 59, but has a 148-65-1 overall record. Love said NCAA violations during Erickson's tenure at Miami were found not to be his fault upon extensive background checks.

I think it's clear Erickson was the finest choice out of Love's finalists. But one thing is for certain - Love wasn't looking to hire an up-and-coming youngster.
