Hot Spot: The Sugar Bowl

The Sugar Bowl

4005 N. Scottsdale Road (480) 946-0051

It's hard to miss the Sugar Bowl's bubblegum pink building when walking through Old Town Scottsdale. The shop stands out amidst the surrounding Southwestern decor, with painted glass windows and a rainbow-colored, cartoon-lettered sign easily tempting passers-by into the unique eatery.

Sugar Bowl guests find themselves in a 50s-style ice cream parlor, reminiscent of shops in movies like "Grease." "I feel like the servers should be wearing poodle skirts and roller skates," accounting sophomore Melissa Roland says as she licks a scoop of Turkish coffee ice cream from a sugar cone.

For under $5, diners can choose from two pages of sundaes and ice creams, syrups and toppings. Among the most popular is the Top Hat sundae, a cream puff filled with vanilla ice cream and smothered in hot fudge, manager Ricky Gonzalez says.

The Sugar Bowl is a "fun, family place," Gonzalez says, but adds that it is also a popular place for students during late nights on weekends, when the restaurant stays open until midnight.

"The atmosphere here is perfect for a date or just for going out with friends," Roland says as she finishes her cone. "And the ice cream is so good!"
