Opinions: Letters to the Editor

Where are the opinions?

Having read the last two opinion pieces concerning the issue of abortion, I was amazed to find that they actually took no stand on the issue.

This seems to defeat the purpose of placing the column in the opinion section of The State Press. If your opinion is that disagreement still exists and that resolution should be made, well, that's called "obvious." Most people do not need 600-plus words to be told things they already know.

If you have nothing new to add to the debate, then write about something else. Please, stop peddling a neutral stance on a difficult issue. It's unfair to the readers and the issue at hand.

Memorial Union food

isn't that bad

After reading Daniel Schaefer's letter to the editor in Tuesday's The State Press, I was inspired to remark on a trend I've noticed on the opinion page.

It has nothing to do with the Parking and Transit Gestapo, but rather the communal attitude expressed toward the Memorial Union's food services.

I grew up in a Maryvale ghetto, surrounded by perpetual gang violence, drug sales and use, and indiscriminate crime.

My diet, until around age 15, consisted of macaroni and tomato sauce, peanut butter and jelly, City of Glendale tap water and the occasional fast food cheeseburger. Thus, reading the constant bellyaching of the Snottsdale majority here at ASU about how terrible the food is in the MU has just about driven me insane.

The last time I checked, there were professional chefs cooking up full-course meals at Pitchforks. Oftentimes I never had enough to eat, but there, I have all I "care to." I feel like I'm eating at a nice restaurant. No, I am.

So my message to those too good for Pitchforks? Trade in your Uggs for some Payless sneakers, and have the humility to eat a square meal when you've got it at hand.

After all, maybe if you had a salad and sandwich from Pitchfork's every day for lunch instead of a Frappucino and pizza, you might actually look good in those trendy clothes that you bought two sizes too small.

Abortion

One of the major complaints that I've heard about the abortion issue is that women are going to get abortions whether they are legal, and therefore we should have it be legal in order to make sure that people are being safe about the abortion.

Is it right to make something legal just because people will do it anyway? Should we have doctors performing suicide services because people will kill themselves anyway?

Should we be able to contact a doctor to have him murder our neighbor so it is done in a safe way?

Just because something will be done regardless, doesn't mean our government should take the stance that it should be allowed.

For those out there that say the government shouldn't take away your right to do something with your body, it already does. We don't have the right to use our bodies to harm another living being.
