ASU's revamped class registration system opened on Thursday and nearly 2,000 students have signed up without major glitches, a University official said.

Students, however, reported error messages when registering for some classes.

As of Saturday morning, 1,853 students had registered for classes, and the new system had processed about 9,700 successful drop/add requests, said Jennifer Glawson, associate registrar.

"We're very excited," she said. "Students are registering, and we're seeing a lot of activity."

Registration began at 7 a.m. Thursday with honors students and athletes. The peak time was shortly after noon on Thursday, when the second set of enrollment appointments began. About 1,100 concurrent users were registering at that time, Glawson said.

The traffic did not strain the system, and there were no major glitches, Glawson said.

Anne Marie Norgren, a mathematics freshman, said she liked the new system but found a few bugs that need to be worked out.

The system wouldn't allow her to register for three classes, saying she lacked the prerequisites even though she had taken the necessary courses.

"I think it will be good in a few semesters, but the first time around it's difficult for anything," Norgren said.

The option to search by various factors was convenient, Norgren added.

But she was frustrated she couldn't search by instructor, she said.

Justin Helepololei, an anthropology freshman, said the new system was complex but he liked some of the features, such as the visual display of the weekly class schedule.

The revamped system was also slower than the old one, Helepololei added.

"There was a lot of loading, and to get into the different class categories took a while," he said. "At least longer than the old way."

The search function is slower because the new system displays more information, Glawson said.

She suggested speeding up searches by narrowing the search criteria.

"We will continue to look for ways to improve performance," Glawson said.

The registrar's office fielded calls from students late last week, including inquiries about course requirements and reserve capacity errors.

Some seniors and continuing freshmen will have the next shot at enrollment, beginning at 7 a.m. today.

About 4,000 enrollment appointments are scheduled each day, split between 7 a.m. and noon start times, Glawson said.

Enrollment appointments are assigned primarily based on earned credit hours, Glawson said.

The new system also allows students to register 24 hours a day. Previously, the system would shut down between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

According to data from the Registrar's Office, 168 students registered between 6 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday.

The changes were part of a University-wide upgrade of student information software.

The last upgrade was in 1980, "so it was time for a change," Glawson said.
