ASU football player injured in car crash

ASU football player Chad Green was in critical condition at a Scottsdale hospital late Monday where he was treated for injuries he sustained in a traffic accident Sunday.

Green, a 22-year-old senior cornerback, was traveling northbound on McClintock Drive around 3:26 a.m. Sunday when he attempted a left turn into a private driveway near University Drive, police reported.

As he turned, a vehicle driven by 43-year-old Brian King struck Green's 2005 Toyota Scion, police reported.

Officers arrested King on charges of driving under the influence. He was not injured, police reported.

A Tempe police spokesman would not release King's blood alcohol content.

Officers are unsure if Green was impaired when the incident occurred and are awaiting results of a blood test, said Officer Brandon Banks.

Green was not wearing a seatbelt, police reported.

It will take three to five days to determine the full extent of Green's injuries and his prognosis, said Mark Brand, an athletic department spokesman.

"It's just wait and see now," he said.

ASU football coach Dennis Erickson has visited Green and his family at Scottsdale Osborn hospital, Brand said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Green family," Erickson said.
