Two ASU track team greats excelled in Belgium on Saturday.
Former Sun Devil track and field team members Lisa Galaviz and Aaron Aguayo turned in personal best performances at the 2007 KBC-Nacht van de Atletiek meet in Heusden, Belgium.
However, Galaviz's time of 9:28.75 in the women's 3,000m steeplechase was not just a personal record for herself by just 10 seconds.
The eight-time All-American and former U.S. Champion also broke the U.S. record of 9:29.32 set by Brianna Shook of Toledo in 2004 on the same track.
Galaviz finished the meet in fourth place.
Fresh off his second place finish in the men's 3000m steeplechase at the U.S. Championships in June, Aguayo improved on his own mark as he prepares for the biggest meet of his life, the IAAF World Championship in Athletics in Osaka, Japan beginning Aug. 25.
Aguayo finished in 12th place with a time of 8:20.34, about seven seconds faster than the personal best time he set at the U.S. Championships.
The only current Sun Devil competing in the meet was red shirt freshman Ben Engelhardt, who finished ninth in the men's 5,000m run with his own new personal best of 14:35.79.
Transfers could add depth to baseball
Kentucky's loss is going to be the Sun Devils' gain next spring.
After completing his release from Kentucky last week, outfielder Jason Kipnis now plans to transfer to ASU, according to The Arizona Republic.
Kipnis was kicked off the Wildcats baseball team last season for violating a team rule.
In the 34 games Kipnis played in as a red shirt freshman, he hit six home runs and knocked in 27 RBIs.
Along with Kipnis, ASU may also bring shortstop Cale Iorg to Tempe.
Although Iorg committed to ASU earlier in July, the Detroit Tigers drafted him in the sixth round back in June.
If Iorg doesn't sign with the Tigers by Aug. 15, then he is expected to replace former three-year starter at shortstop Andrew Romine, who is playing in the minor leagues for the LAA Angels.
After playing for Alabama in 2005, Iorg left school to go on a Mormon mission.
With rumors Sun Devil junior third baseman Matt Hall is considering transfer options, junior first baseman Brett Wallace may be the only returning starter in the infield for the Sun Devils.
If Hall does transfer, sophomore utility player Rauol Torrez and junior infielder Greg Bordes would compete, along with incoming freshman, for the spot at third base next season.
