ASU women remain undefeated

The ASU women's swim and dive team remained undefeated on the season this weekend, beating the UNLV Rebels 205-95.

"The women's team did a great job this weekend," ASU swimming coach Michael Chasson. "They swam pretty well and the results showed."

Several women were responsible for the Sun Devils early 3-0 record on the season.

Senior captain Caitlin Andrew placed first in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, and 200 individual medley, along with helping the 200 medley relay team to a victory. Junior All American Jen Beckberger won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

"The women have swum well early on this year, but they haven't been tested yet," Chasson said. "When we go against USC, they will be tested."

Senior Lindsey Brown placed first in the 200 freestyle. Freshman Shannon Garrett notched her first collegiate victory in the 1000 freestyle.

Freshman diver Brittany Jumer won both the one meter and three meter events.

"It feels good to win at my second collegiate meet," Jumer said. "I still have stuff to work on, but I have big goals ahead of me this year."

The men stayed winless on the season with a 158.5-141.5 loss to UNLV to bring their overall record to 0-3.

"We didn't have everyone healthy at the meet and it costs us once again," Chasson said. "We were missing Magnus Kjellberg and Ante Cvitkovic because they were sick and we don't have the depth to compete if we are missing swimmers. We would have won this meet if everyone was healthy."

Once again, the men's squad was led by C.J. Neuss with victories in three different events, including the 200 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, and 1000 freestyle.

"He is swimming really well for us early on," Chasson said. "Any event we put him in, we think he can win right now."

Another bright spot for the men's team was diver Micky Benedetti, who won both the one meter and three meter diving competitions.

The Sun Devils will get a chance to show off in front their home fans when they host their first meet of the season against the University of California Santa Barbara on Friday, Oct. 26.
