Men's team edged by USC
It came down to one relay race for the ASU men's swimming team.
A first and third place in the final relay would have captured a victory over the USC Trojans in ASU's first Pac-10 meeting of the season.
But a first and fourth resulted, and the men's team lost their meet 150-149, bringing their overall record to 2-4 on the season.
"USC is our first real meeting of the season for both teams and the results have meaning," said ASU coach Michael Chasson. "The dual meetings had no meaning to me except working on getting better."
All-American C.J. Neuss was strong once again with a victory in the 1000 freestyle. Sophomore Ante Cvitkovic won the 100 backstroke event while contributing in the men's top relay team.
Junior Vinicius Waked won the 200 freestyle while junior Sean Boyle finished right behind him in second.
Women open with win
The women's team began their Pac-10 schedule with a bang and a 158-141 win over the Trojans collecting their fifth win on the season. They are now 5-1.
It was a career day for ASU's Ashley Evans.
The sophomore swimmer from Madison, N.J., put her name in the ASU record books in the 200 Individual Medley. Her time of 2:01.60 was the fifth fastest ever swam by a Sun Devil. She also earned her "B" standard time in the 200 I.M.
Senior Caitlan Andrew continued her strong season with a win in the 100 backstroke and another "B" qualifying time. Junior Jen Beckberger took first place in the 200 freestyle while contributing in the women's 200 relay time victory. In the 200 fly, sophomore Ashton Aubry placed first while adding a "B" standard time.
The Sun Devil women return to the pool on Nov. 17 to take on Pac-10 foe Washington State at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center at noon. The men's team returns to the pool after Thanksgiving when they travel to Austin, Texas to participate in the Texas Invite.
