Pittel disqualification confirmed; Appleton to be USG president

The Undergraduate Student Government's Elections Department on Saturday confirmed its earlier decision to disqualify Joshua Pittel, the winner of the March 31 and April 1 vote, and declared Mark Appleton USG's next president.

The Supreme Court of the Associated Students of ASU concluded that Assistant Elections Director Matthew Garrett and Student Engagement Director Daniel Ashlock followed proper procedure, Garrett said in an e-mail.

The court asked Garrett and Ashlock to conduct this second investigation after Pittel appealed the original disqualifications, which Elections Director Elyssa Ford issued him for alleged door-to-door campaigning in a residence hall — a practice prohibited by ASASU's election code.

"I think [Ashlock's] decision is final," Appleton said.

Pittel said he is preparing a document challenging parts of Garrett's and Ashlock's investigation, which he planned to submit to the Supreme Court on Sunday.

"It's not exactly over yet," he said about his appeal.

Pittel said he hopes the Supreme Court will get involved again but is not sure what he would do if the court declined to take further action.
