Sprinkles Cupcakes coming to Scottsdale

Sprinkle Cupcakes, one of the top competitors in the new cupcake craze sweeping across America, is coming to Scottsdale.

The store, originally scheduled to open in March, is now set to welcome everyone beginning May 7.

The opening delay was due to issues with the store's contractor, the City of Scottsdale and issues with utilities, which were beyond the store's control, said Sprinkles Cupcakes spokesperson, Victoria Stein.

The store will be located on 4501 North Scottsdale Road, right across the street from Fashion Square Mall.

The cupcakes have gotten the attention of Oprah, Martha Stewart, Good Morning America, Regis and Kelly Live as well magazines such as Time Magazine and Bon Appetit.

"The second I heard a Sprinkles store was opening in Scottsdale I called my sister who lives there and planed my next visit to her," 17-year-old Miranda May said from her home in San Jose, Calif.

May wouldn't mind driving to Beverly Hills, approximately 339 of miles from her home, to get a cupcake from Sprinkles Cupcakes, she said.

"I, and everyone I know are obsessed with their cupcakes," May said. "Scottsdale (residents) are so lucky to have their very own store now."

Sprinkles owner Charles Nelson chose to open a store in Scottsdale because, "Scottsdale is a sophisticated market that we believe would appreciate our product."

Jamie Ramirez, a junior at ASU, said, " I have heard so much about this store and I literally have been counting down the days until it opens here."

Along with the customary flavors of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, Sprinkles Cupcakes flavors range from banana to carrot, chai latte to orange, and coconut to pumpkin.

Sprinkles makes special cupcakes for various holidays throughout the year. For example, they bake a special cupcake for Cinco de Mayo, Mother's day and Father's Day cupcake boxes, and Fourth of July cupcakes.

Red velvet, dark chocolate, vanilla, and lemon Sprinkles Cupcakes mixes are sold at William-Sonoma stores for $14.

The environment is also important to the Sprinkles Cupcake family. All their napkins, plates, boxes, shopping bags, and gift bags are made with recycled material, company officials said.

Candace Nelson and her husband first opened Sprinkles Cupcakes Beverly Hills in April 2005. Nelson started the bakery as an "extension of her great grandmother's legacy" who was known for her "distinct desserts" she made in San Francisco in the 1930's. They have now expanded to other locations in California, Dallas, Texas, and are planning on opening stores in London and Tokyo. Each cupcake is $3.25 or $36 dozen.
