9 arrests made in milk-vomit crash

ASU police have arrested nine Delta Sigma Phi fraternity members on suspicion of disorderly conduct.

The members are suspected of drinking and vomiting milk onto traffic from the footbridge over University Drive in Tempe on Sept. 22.

The regurgitation allegedly caused a collision, injuring a mother and her 6-year-old daughter and totaling their car.

Police made the arrests throughout the week, with the latest four arrests on Thursday.

Delta Sigma Phi’s national chapter, located in Indianapolis, is currently investigating the incident as well, spokesman Scott Wiley said.

“We are conducting our own investigation,” he said.

Wiley said staff from the national headquarters flew to Tempe the day after the incident to meet with the chapter, ASU police and University officials.

ASU’s police department and student judicial affairs office are also conducting investigations.

Assistant Police Chief Jay Spradling said police are fairly certain the incident was hazing, although there is no criminal law against it.

ASU, however, does have a strict policy preventing hazing.

“Delta Sigma Phi does not participate in or condone hazing in any way whatsoever,” Delta Sigma Phi President John Cree said.

Cree said active members of the fraternity weren’t involved in the incident in any way.

But one the men arrested, David Velez, is listed in a Greek life directory as an active member of the fraternity and one of its new-member educators.

Velez is the fraternity member who came up with the idea of drinking the milk, Spradling said.

Cree said he was unaware of Velez’s arrest.

Eight of the arrests were new members, Spradling said. He said Velez, the “pledge master,” was not on the bridge.

Other members arrested included Daniel Glover, 18; Robert Komadina, 18; Brooks Tragash, 18; Brandon Van Norman, 19; Erving Edison, 21; Anthony Signorino, 18; Anthony Buzzetti, 18, and J. Zachary Singer, 18.

Several student witnesses aided police in identifying the fraternity, Spradling said.

ASU spokeswoman Julie Newberg said Judicial Affairs is still investigating the allegations.

Cree said his fraternity has been placed on hold during the investigations and is currently unable to participate in Greek events.

The Interfraternity Council declined to comment.
