Billing woes still plague residents

Though the semester is nearing its end, some Taylor Place residents continue to have problems with billing.

On Nov. 7, Taylor Place management incorrectly charged some first-time on-campus residents a $125 application fee they had already paid.

Letters also went out to parents of students who owed ASU money, some with this charge included, Taylor Place Director of Operations Jennifer Shea said.

Students who live on campus at any point in their collegiate career pay an application fee to ASU before their first semester living in a residence hall, said Michael Coakley, associate vice president and executive director of University housing. ASU is supposed to then reimburse all residence halls with the amount equivalent to the number of first-time students the hall has, he said.

Taylor Place’s management charged some students the application fee because they have not yet been reimbursed by ASU, Shea said.

Coakley said Taylor Place, run by Capstone Management, knows that residents already paid the application fee. But he said ASU has lagged in reimbursing residential halls.

“To be honest, we know we’re running a little late with reimbursement, but we’ve had some staff members out sick,” Coakley said. “But Taylor Place knows these students have paid or they wouldn’t be living there. They know that these students don’t owe that application fee.”

Coakley said neither Taylor Place nor Capstone Management had spoken with him or any of his staff about charging students the same fee twice. He said he would speak with them about the situation.

Students whose guarantors — usually parents or guardians — received letters were given five days to pay the listed amount, and any who did will have the $125 credited toward next semester’s rent.

For worst-case scenarios, overcharged students who have already paid for the entire year and are not planning to live at Taylor Place next year will be fully reimbursed, Shea said.

Any students with questions are welcome to talk to Shea, she said.
