Newest 'Ice Age' full of laughs

It can sometimes be hard to find a sequel to a film that keeps the same appeal than that of the original.

Not to be officially released to theaters until July 1, a special Father’s Day screening of the latest “Ice Age” film was shown Sunday at select theaters around the Valley and did just that.

Long since we were first introduced to the characters of “Ice Age” in 2002, times have since changed for this anything but normal herd consisting of a sloth, saber-toothed tiger and their leader, a mammoth.

Manny (voice of Ray Romano), the wooly mammoth, is now married to Ellie (voiced by Queen Latifah who is awaiting the birth of their child.

Realizing that times are changing, saber-toothed tiger, Diego (voice of Denis Leary) is faced with the hardships of getting older.

Feeling as though he will lose his edge as a vicious predator of the wild, he makes a decision to leave the herd creating, much conflict between him and Manny.

Sid (voice of John Leguizamo), the much loved sloth, is caught in the middle of witnessing Diego leave and Manny’s family begin and is overwhelmed with loneliness and longing for a family of his own.

After he goes for a walk to drown in his sorrows, he comes across three eggs that are nearly as big as he is and decides to make them his own.

When the eggs hatch, however, Sid gets something a little more than he bargained for – three tyrannosaurus rex dinosaurs that instantly latch on to him as their “mama.”

That is, of course, until their real mother decides to take them back into her custody — and take Sid with them.

With hopes to save Sid, Manny and Ellie embark on a dangerous journey to a world of dinosaurs they previously did not know existed to get him back, which will in turn reunite them with Diego bringing the herd back together.

An introduction of a new character provides viewers with a comical release — Australian-accented weasel Buck (voice of Simon Pegg).

This “Crocodile Dundee”-like weasel, who has had much experience with these ruthless dinosaurs, brings the herd to the core of adventure and close to the face of death.

Other than the headache that may be acquired from 3D experience that seems to be ever-so-popular right now in mainstream children’s movies, “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” will certainly keeps the laughter nearly constant.

Filled with a vast amount of adult-humor, the film brings viewers on an expedition with these loveable characters through a time of prehistoric bliss.

“Dawn of the Dinosaurs” is the third of the “Ice Age” series, originally directed by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha, and it certainly has not lost its angle of witty stories sure to please those of any age.

“Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” a 3D experience, will hit theaters July 1. More information and trailers can be found at www.iceagemovie.com.
