Denied Devil Spirit?
I am a die-hard Sun Devil fan. I was alarmed that after our victory against Idaho State at our home opener we were not allowed to ring the victory bell.
President Crow and other faculty have focused on school spirit this semester with emphasis on the incoming freshmen class.
But where is the school spirit at our functions and games? It’s probably in the same place where the fun is — kicked off of campus.
I agree with safety; I understand the responsibilities of crowd control, but the use of these hired security staff tattooed up like Tent City detainees, constantly threatening and harassing the student body during football games has gone too far.
The zero tolerance attitude in Sun Devil stadium is sending the wrong message. If you’re suspected of doing something, you’re immediately ejected — no appeals, no jury and no rights.
I’m not talking about drugs or alcohol use, fights or obscene behavior.
I’m talking about jumping around in the stairway high-fiving your friends, lifting up a student during a touchdown, or horsing around with your buddies.
Compared to the past student bodies, our student body is the most tamed, respectful, honorable and law abiding. We are also the most controlled, restricted and authority-abused student body in ASU history.
The security officers will use the defense that they are just trying to do their jobs but if that is so, they need a major job description redefinition.
The bottom line is that I love ASU, but I hate attending the sporting events because I feel unwelcome by the staff.
Go Devils!
