Supporting the Sun Devils
After Saturday’s disappointing loss to California we were leaving the stadium asking each other about a lot of “what if’s?” The one that stood out the most: What if the student body and ASU fans supported the quarterback?
I think it is extremely easy to sit in our seats during the game and criticize the effort and coaching on the field and boo the quarterback.
I personally think it is embarrassing to our school, and imagine how it makes us look to the California fans. I have always been impressed with the camaraderie that a football TEAM has had with each member on their team. Maybe it’s time we as fans and students follow that example.

Slippery slope of states’ rights
(In response to Joseph Hermiz’s Wednesday column “States should decide gay marriage.”)
Perhaps Mr. Hermiz is not a student of history, but the idea that civil rights should be decided by the states is ludicrous.
We should remember that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were opposed with the argument of “states’ rights,” and we cannot deny the similarities between the two movements. Civil rights are civil rights, and should not be decided by majority vote.
I’m shocked, by the way, that Mr. Hermiz would try and link the struggle for gay rights to North American Man/Boy Love Association. He speaks of how the United States is made up of diverse “moral” communities (I use that lightly) who would seek to ban gay rights because in their minds, they, ridiculously, link NAMBLA and gay rights, as well.
So, we should let ignorance run rampant through Alabama because they want to ban gay marriage?
Mr. Hermiz used the slippery slope fallacy, why shouldn’t we? What if they want to ban mixed-race marriages? Would the “moral” communities still cry “states’ rights”?
