Whether they were lighting up the track or tearing up the field, the ASU men’s and women’s track and field teams received strong performances from all over in their Double Dual meet this past weekend against UA and NAU.

The ASU men swept both teams, defeating UA 115-85 while outscoring NAU 132-47. On the women’s side, the Sun Devils beat NAU 127-63 but were edged out 107-93 by UA.

Overall, the team won 17 different events, which included several personal-bests.

The strength of the ASU men’s throwers led the way, as they won every throwing event in the meet, with senior Jason Lewis leading the charge.

Lewis won the hammer with a toss of 66.21 meters (217-03 feet) while also taking the discus with a mark of 58.95 meters (193-05 feet). Lewis also finished second in the shot put behind teammate Ryan Whiting, who won with a throw of 21.26 meters (69-09.00 feet).

In the final throwing event, ASU freshman thrower Eddie McClain won the javelin with a toss of 62.08 meters (203-08 feet). Sophomore Marc Peck was second in the event.

On the track, the ASU men flat out dominated in the sprinting events.

ASU senior Lawrence Trice showcased his blazing speed by sweeping both the short sprinting events. In the 100-meter dash, Trice clocked a personal-best 10.39 seconds while also taking first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.10 seconds, which is also a personal best.

ASU senior Ray Miller was also impressive, taking second in both races behind Trice.

In the 400-meter dash, senior Donald Sanford and Justin Kremer placed first and second, respectively. Sanford’s winning time was 46.73 seconds while Kremer was close behind in 47.02 seconds. The duo later teamed up with Miller and sophomore John Kline to win the 4x400 relay in 3:10.16.

ASU junior Ian Caracciolo was victorious in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.98 seconds. In the men’s 800-meter race, the Sun Devils placed first through fourth, with junior Mason McHenry leading the way in 1:48.91.

Not to be outdone, the Sun Devil women also showcased their talent in the sprinting events as well.

After battling a leg injury most of the season, ASU junior Dominique Maloy turned in her best performance of the season, as she won the women’s 400-meter dash in a lifetime-best of 53.64. Maloy also was a part of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads for the Sun Devils.

ASU senior sprinter Jasmine Chaney, who also had a hand in both relay efforts, won the 100-meter dash for the second consecutive weekend, finishing in 11.76 seconds.

ASU sophomore distance runner Kauren Tarver won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:29.36.

The final win for the Sun Devil women came in the field, as freshman Christabel Nettey won the long jump with a leap of 6.28 meters (20-07.25 feet).

ASU’s multi-event athletes will compete next weekend at the Pac-10 heptathlon and decathlon championships in Berkeley, Calif. All other events are scheduled for the following weekend at the same venue.
