17-year-old ASU student suspected of manslaughter

A 17-year-old girl suspected of causing a three-vehicle collision that left two people dead Saturday has been identified as an ASU student.

The student is facing charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault, Tempe Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Carbajal said.

The girl was exiting the Quadrangles Village Apartments on University Drive in Tempe around 3:15 a.m. Saturday when her Ford Expedition collided with a Chevrolet Caprice going east on University Drive, he said.

Witnesses told police that, within one minute of the collision, a motorcycle crashed into the Chevrolet, Carbajal said. The motorcyclist, 19-year-old ASU bioengineering sophomore Matt West, died later at a nearby hospital, Carbajal said.

A passenger in the Chevrolet, 25-year-old hip-hop artist Abay Lattin, died at the scene, he said.

Carbajal said investigators at the scene of the crash noticed signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment from the 17 year old.

“We believe alcohol is a factor, and we’re continuing that analysis,” Carbajal said.

A blood sample was taken from the girl and it could take several weeks for the Department of Public Safety to process the results, he said.

Carbajal said the 17-year-old was released to her parents after the crash, and the amount of available information regarding the incident will slow down as police continue to build their case.
