Letters: Sept. 28

Foundation of  Youth

The 2010 midterm elections have been causing a buzz on campuses all over the country. Organizations such as Rock the Vote, as well as ASU’s own USG and ASA, are actively seeking to mobilize and register voters with the message “Vote Again!”

As Rock the Vote President Heather Smith points out, “It’s not 2008. There’s no presidential race to unite the country’s focus and galvanize sweeping momentum.” The 2008 Presidential Election had the second highest youth vote turnout, a trend thought to be temporary. Historically, college students have been one of the lowest voting blocks. As a result, legislation is often passed that favors older Americans, but addresses issues such as budget cuts for education that will directly affect college students’ futures.

In the next four years, many college students will be getting jobs, starting families, purchasing homes and making a variety of other important decisions daily. Many of the policies listed on the ballots today will have a significant impact on these goals and life after college, therefore creating a connection to our government and emphasizing the significance of our vote. In addition, most universities have a population large enough to swing the congressional vote for that district. With such significant numbers, college students can undoubtedly shape our future. Vote, and stop allowing college students’ interests to be overlooked.

Vote, and prove that we are still optimistic, enthusiastic and value voting as a civic responsibility.
