Women’s golf opens season in Texas

The 2010 season is underway for the ASU women’s golf team as two golfers kicked off in the NCAA Fall Preview in Bryan, Texas.

Juniors Carlota Ciganda and Giulia Molinaro teed off yesterday in the opening round of the tournament at the par 72 Traditions Club. The Traditions Club will not only host this week’s event, but the NCAA championship in May as well.

The two Sun Devil golfers were paired with Texas A&M’s Janell Lysack and began play bright and early at 7:51 a.m.

Ciganda, the two time defending Pac-10 champion, shot a five over par 77 in the opening round of tournament play. After the first day, Ciganda sits in a tie for 67th place.

Ciganda closed out round one with a par and two birdies to end her day on a strong note.

Ciganda was recently named the No. 4 player to watch this season by GolfWorld Magazine.

Molinaro ended round one in a tie for 51st place after shooting a 76. Like her teammate, Molinaro recovered nicely after a rough double bogey to open the round. Molinaro proceeded to sink 11 pars and two birdies, finishing four over par.

Ciganda and Molinaro take to the course for round two of the three day event Tuesday, with both golfers looking to make a move up the leaderboard.
