Fire crews respond to smoke at Downtown campus

Phoenix fire crews responded to the Downtown campus Tuesday evening after a cleaning crew discovered smoke inside the Nursing and Health Innovation building.

Battalion Chief Bryant Johnston of the Phoenix Fire Department said the source of the smoke was a malfunctioning air conditioning unit.

No flames were reported and there were no injuries, Johnston said.

A nighttime cleaning crew saw smoke on the third floor and notified building security, he said. Firefighters arrived on scene at about 8:20 p.m.

What caused the air conditioning unit to malfunction is still unclear.

No students or faculty were in the building at the time the smoke was reported. There was no other visible damage to the building.
