BALANCING MULTIPLE BUDGETS
(In response to Sean McCauley’s Feb. 14 column, “How to fix the economy.”)
Sean McCauley began his column "How to Fix the Economy" paying credit to Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., for his balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution, recently introduced in Congress.
Similarly, the editorial board of The Arizona Republic has characterized Schweikert as a "budget guy" who loves nothing more than to pore over balance sheets. Wait. Is this the same Schweikert who is $523,000 in campaign debt? If our new congressman wants his constituents to believe he is an advocate for fiscal responsibility, he might consider being fiscally responsible himself.
Here's yet another example of hypocrisy among Tea Party Republicans.

THE ABSENCE OF OPTIMISM
(In response to the Feb. 2 editorial, “USG’s moment.”)
How does ASU ACE differ from every other organized protest and crafty acronym or slogan created by USG in past years and by past administrations?
Why does this year’s push warrant more confidence when past attempts have proven “ineffective” and “unproductive” — in your words?
I’m not trying to poke holes, just asking what seems to be an obvious question that arises after reading your optimism.
Also, I’m confused by the idea that somehow 130,000 Arizona students are going to stand up and vote in a way that not only influences public policy but also sends a message to politicians. Are all Arizona college students suddenly registered to vote in this state?
Don’t we have a sizeable out-of-state population? And for those who are in-state (and, going even further, actually registered), are we to expect that their votes are spread across a wide range of districts and not concentrated in districts that are already represented by pro-education politicians due to political necessity (like those that represent the Tempe area, where I’d wager a sizeable amount of those who actually vote are registered)?
Or am I somehow misrepresenting facts? (Because I know, by god, The State Press would never do such a thing.)
