FAULTING THE FLAWS
(In regards to the Feb. 1 editorial, “Gun flaws.”)
I'm fairly disappointed with Tuesday's editorial regarding gun laws.
Background checks are reasonable, but once again we have an article out to criticize the pending legislation to allow guns on college campuses. The editorial cites both the Virginia Tech and UA shootings. For good measure, let's add the Columbine and the University of Texas shootings.
What do these terrible incidents have in common? They took place in gun-free zones, supposedly places where you needn't worry about guns.
The trouble is, people with the intent to kill don't have much respect for the law in the first place. The ban has the effect of making the law-abiding population vulnerable.
Gun deregulations won't stop people like Jared Loughner from killing people, this is true, but gun bans make the Loughners of the world more dangerous.
Recall as well that police didn't stop him, ordinary citizens did.

While Arizona does have loose gun laws, what the writer of this editorial failed to mention is the fact that Jared Loughner bought his handgun at a big name sporting store and went through the background check process, so background checks aren't the end all answer to gun violence.
Not only that, Arizona isn't the only state with loopholes involving gun shows, just look at Texas and Colorado. If you’re going to make a claim you should look at your facts first.
