After an impressive opening weekend in the Kajikawa Classic, both ASU senior third basemen Krista Donnenwirth and freshman pitcher Dallas Escobedo were recognized for their performances.
Donnenwirth was named Pac-10 Player of the Week, while Escobedo was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week and USA Softball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 7-13.
Both players were instrumental to the Sun Devils (5-1) success last weekend.
Donnenwirth posted an outstanding .500 batting average, with a .813 slugging percentage. The third-basemen also scored five runs, drove in three runs, and smacked one home run.
Her home run was the lone run scored in ASU’s 1-0 win over Oklahoma State.
“I actually didn’t know until today that I was player of the week,” Donnenwirth said. “Obviously you put in all the hard work, and it’s nice to be acknowledged for that. I’m just seeing the ball well right now, hopefully it can carry on to next weekend.”
Escobedo was dominant in the circle with four wins including victories over No. 22 Oklahoma State and No. 9 Oklahoma.
The right-hander notched 11 strikeouts and scattered two hits over seven innings in ASU’s 1-0 win over OSU. On Saturday, Escobedo again struck out 11 in her complete game, 4-3 victory over OU.
Opposing batters only managed to hit .143 against Escobedo over the course of the weekend.
“It’s kind of cool,” Escobedo said. “I didn’t really go out and think about any of that when I was pitching or playing games. I was looking to win and for my pitches to go well, and I guess it all turned out well.”
